Home Sauna Buying Guide: Indoor Cabins, Outdoor Barrels & Modular Kits
Wood species, heater kW sizing, electrical service, and moisture mitigation: our pre-purchase blueprint for installing a private residential sauna.
Timber Selection: Cedar vs. Hemlock vs. Nordic Spruce
Western Red Cedar remains the gold standard for sauna construction due to its natural resistance to mold, decay, and moisture expansion. Its low thermal density prevents bench wood from becoming scalding hot to the touch.
Canadian Hemlock is an excellent, cost-effective alternative for indoor dry cabins, featuring a smooth, knot-free grain and minimal aroma for those sensitive to natural cedar oils.
Heater Sizing Rule of Thumb
A reliable formula for sizing electric sauna heaters is approximately 1 kilowatt (kW) of heater power for every 45 to 50 cubic feet of cabin volume.
If your sauna incorporates large glass doors or exterior stone walls, increase the calculated kW by 15% to compensate for thermal transmission loss through uninsulated surfaces.
